Beiwai Online is a secondary school affiliated to Beijing Foreign Studies University. In 2000, the Ministry of Education(MOE) approved the university as a pilot university for modern long-distance education. In the same year, the School of Online Education was established.

Over the years, the school has adhered to the original intention and mission of educating people for the Party and the country, and the tradition of rigorous scholarship. It has also actively used learning resources, teaching and research results, as well as educational technology research and development advantages, to develop it into one of the pioneers of online education.

The school provides distance academic education at more than 100 learning centers, spread across more than 20 provinces throughout the country. It offers courses in English, business administration, accounting, information management and information systems, e-commerce, international economics and trade, finance, and computer science and technology to high school graduates who apply for college or bachelor's degrees, as well as to college graduates who apply for bachelor's degrees.

Since 2015, the school has offered English and Chinese education programs for in-service personnel who apply for master’s degrees; Starting in 2019, it has cooperated with the Open University in master's and doctoral programs; It also offers online pre-master's programs together with overseas universities.

The school has excellent teachers, leading foreign language resources, and technology research and development capabilities. As of March 2021, it has completed nearly 30 national, provincial and university-level projects, published more than 10 academic monographs and more than 130 papers in academic journals at home and abroad. It has also hosted nearly 30 international and domestic academic conferences, and held 45 computer software copyright certificates. It has launched more than 140 online academic education courses with independent intellectual property rights and almost 13,000 total class hours.

It has also independently developed more than 500 online courses covering English and 20 other languages used in the countries and regions involved in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Many experts from the school have successively served as members of the National Education Service Standardization Technical Committee and the ISO/TC232, and participated in setting national and international standards for online education and language training, contributing toward the healthy and orderly development of the industry.

The school has successively become the secretariats of the "China Multilingual and Multimodal Corpus and Big Data Research Center" and the "China Computer-Assisted Language Learning Association (ChinaCALL)".

Since 2018, the school has been deeply involved in the pilot project of the MOE on "Artificial Intelligence Boosting Teacher Team Building" and has developed the "Platform for Teachers to Improve AI-assisted Education Capacities".

Starting in 2019, in accordance with the deployment of the its Party committee, the school has undertaken in the construction of the computer-assisted language learning center, the language rehabilitation research center of the Artificial Intelligence and Human Languages Lab and the work of the comprehensive management office.

After more than 20 years of development, the school's performance has been highly affirmed by the education authorities and across all sectors of society. According to the spirit of the 18th and 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the school’s Development Strategy during the 14th Five-Year period(2021-25), the school will continue to utilize advantages in online education and artificial intelligence, adhere to the mission of building a lifelong education system that serves all people, developing high-quality education, and to continuously innovate and make progress.
