The School of Arabic Studies at BFSU was first established as the Arabic Language Program in 1958 and became the Arabic Department in 1981. In 2015, the Arabic Department was renamed the School of Arabic Studies. The school started to offer China’s first master’s and doctoral programs for Arabic Language and Literature in 1981 and 1986 respectively. It was listed as a municipal priority discipline in 2002. In 2007, it was identified as an excellent municipal priority discipline and characteristic program by the Ministry of Education. In 2008, it was identified as a municipal characteristic program with a municipal excellent teaching team. It was listed as a national first-class undergraduate program and municipal first-class program in 2019. The Research Center for Gulf Arab States under the school was listed in the Chinese Think Tank Index (CTTI) in 2018.

Today, the School of Arabic Studies offers a rich variety of academic programs, boasts a strong faculty and high-level teaching and research capacities, and ranks top among its Chinese peers. It is seen as a cradle for top-level professionals competent in the Arabic language, a center for Arabic studies, and a bridge of friendship between the Chinese and Arabic people.

For over six decades, more than 2,000 students have graduated from the School of Arabic Studies. They have been active across many fields, including foreign affairs, international trade, cultural exchanges, journalism, education, academic research and military affairs and have won a good reputation for the School. In the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs alone, more than half of the Arabic-speaking officials are graduates of the school, including over 30 ambassadors and over 100 counselors. Most of the experts in Arabic translation and interpreting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other ministries and commissions have graduated from here. Over the years, the employment rates of the School have consistently reached or approached 100%. Most of our graduates work for employers with high requirements, not just in language competency but also overall capabilities, including the central government departments, higher-education institutions, state-level news agencies, and large and medium-sized enterprises with international business.
