Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) launched its new academic journal, Translation and Society, on Nov 2.

The journal, co-founded by BFSU and the professional committee of socio-translation studies at the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese (CACSEC) and published and distributed by the Commercial Press, intends to publish original research findings in socio-translation studies and related fields, with the goal of exploring the co-evolutionary relationship of the bidirectional interactions between translation and society.

It aims to enhance interface and interdisciplinary research of translation studies and other humanities, social sciences and related sciences. It also seeks to bridge translation studies with translation education, practice, profession and industry.

Regular columns in the journal include theories and methodologies of socio-translation studies; translator, actor and translation production process; literary translation, cultural translation and international communication; applied translation, translation technology and social services; translation education, profession and ethics; and other research findings related to socio-translation studies.

Last week’s launch, where the first edition was unveiled, was attended by Luo Xuanmin, director of the CACSEC’s expert committee and professor at Tsinghua University; Wu Bo, a member of the standing committee of the CPC South China University of Technology committee and vice-president of the university; Fu Jingmin, editor-in-chief of Shanghai Journal of Translators; and Wang Hongtao, editor-in-chief of Translation and Society, president of the CACSEC’s professional committee of socio-translation studies and professor at BFSU’s School of English and International Studies.

Congratulatory messages for the inaugural issue were penned by Jia Wenjian, president of BFSU and deputy secretary of the CPC BFSU committee; Xu Jun, professor at Zhejiang University; Wang Kefei, professor at BFSU; Lyu Jun, professor at Nanjing Normal University; Sun Yifeng, professor at the University of Macau; and Wang Binhua, professor at the University of Leeds.

The launch event saw participation from more than 120 scholars representing over 70 domestic universities, including the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the University of Macau.
