A simultaneous class on Sino-Czech traditional Chinese medicine cultural exchanges was held on Sept 14. The event was launched by Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) and the Palacký University Olomouc (UP).

The course taught in Czech language was lectured by Xu Weizhu, director of the BFSU Czech Teaching and Research Office, and Zdenek Chmelka, a lecturer from the Confucius Institute at UP, and attended by students and teachers from both universities.

Jin Limin, director of the Office of Confucius Institutes at BFSU, appreciated the close partnership between China and the Czech Republic. She praised the achievements made by the Confucius Institute at UP in promoting cultural exchanges since its establishment and said she is looking forward to in-person discussions when the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

David Kosina, foreign director of the Confucius Institute at UP, spoke highly of the simultaneous class and the teaching results of BFSU’s Czech major. He thanked the Office of Confucius Institutes at BFSU for its support.

Chen Zhong, director of the Confucius Institute at UP, welcomed attendees of the session and said he hopes that they will enhance Sino-Czech language and cultural exchanges.

In her lecture on TCM’s role in COVID-19 pandemic response, Xu summarized the humanistic connotation of TCM and its philosophy. She introduced TCM classics, common treatment methods and applications in pandemic prevention and control, emphasizing the integration of Western and Chinese medicine in the fight against SARS, artemisinin research and development and COVID-19 prevention and control.

Zdenek Chmelka talked about the development and current situation of TCM in the Czech Republic and shared his experience when studying at two well-known TCM schools in the country.

The event was organized by the Office of Confucius Institutes at BFSU, the Czech Language Teaching and Research Office at the School of European Languages and Cultures and the Confucius Institute at UP. The aim was to further explore a new intelligent teaching mode in international talent training.

The session enhanced BFSU students’ ability in telling Chinese stories in foreign languages and applied modern teaching methods to boost online interactions between Czech and Chinese students.
