A ceremony was recently held at the World Language Museum of Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) to promote Los Pliegues del ocaso and Arcoíris en una ráfaga de viento, two multilingual collections of poems themed on indigenous Mexicans and ethnic minorities in China.

The promotional event brought together the following personalities: Jidi Majia, director of the Poetry Committee of the China Writers Association (CWA); Patricia Davila, vice-president of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM); He Jing, director of the BFSU International Exchange and Cooperation Office; Anel Pérez, director of the UNAM Literary Department; and Adalberto Noyola, director of UNAM's Centre for Mexican Studies at BFSU.

The event conducted online and in person was presided over by Chang Fuliang, dean of the Department of Hispanic and Portuguese, and was livestreamed through Tencent Meeting.

Davila said the two collections symbolize the friendship between China and Mexico, and their publication is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. It also marks the 10th anniversary of the founding of UNAM's Centre for Mexican Studies at BFSU.

The two collections with high artistic value reflect the worldview exhibited in each language, depicted the image of indigenous Mexicans and ethnic minorities in China, and made the voice of women from the two countries heard, Davila added.

He said BFSU and UNAM have strengthened cooperation in talent cultivation and promoted bilateral exchanges in academic research, economics, culture and politics since the establishment of the Centre for Mexican Studies in 2012.

As the latest achievements made by the two universities, the collections show a unique female perspective and the beauty of Chinese and Mexico cultures, helping the languages and cultures of Chinese ethnic minorities go global and introducing foreign minor languages and cultures to Chinese readers.

The two multilingual poem collections, compiled by Jidi and Shi Yining and published by Guangxi Normal University Press and National Literature magazine affiliated with the CWA, include the work of seven indigenous Mexican women poets and seven poetesses of ethnic groups in China.
