The library of BFSU is composed of four parts: Chinese collection, English and other languages collection, periodicals reading room, and the office area, offering English, French, Russian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, and other 44 languages. It contains almost 1.01 million books, 250,000 electronic books, 1100 periodicals in Chinese and other languages, 10,000 audio-visual materials, 26,000 full-text electronic periodicals, 25 databases, and 4 self-built databases. These materials are mainly about language, literature, and culture, which makes the library unique. With the discipline development, the recent years have witnessed the increase of collections of law, diplomacy, economy, media, and management.
The library adopts the advanced ALEPH500 automatic management system, realizing the cataloguing and searching of multilingual materials inside the library and in some departments. The interlibrary loan service is available among the library of BFSU, libraries of 40 universities in Beijing, and the National Library, providing the transmitting service of CASHL and BALIS original foreign-language periodicals. In order to make sure the accessability of library materials by BFSU students outside the university, the library has opened the VPN remote access system.
The overall construction goal of the library in BFSU during the Eleventh Five Year Plan is to realize the specialization of materials, the informatization of service, the professionalization of working groups, and the scientification of management, and through participation in joint resources construction and system sharing, to try to build it into a protecting base of final materials and an information service centre for domestic foreign languages teaching and research, as well as a world-class research library which meets the international standards, provides abundant materials and disersified services, shows openness and harmony, and satisfies the needs of readers.
