BFSU hosts Seventh National High-end Forum on Foreign Language Education Reform and Development for Higher Education Institutions

The Seventh National High-end Forum on Foreign Language Education Reform and Development for Higher Education Institutions opened in Beijing on March 25.

Jointly hosted by Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), the Advisory Committee of Foreign Language and Literature Teaching in Higher Education and the Advisory Committee of College Foreign Language Teaching in Higher Education under the Ministry of Education (MOE) as well as the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Branch of the China Association of Higher Education, and co-organized by Peking University, the forum drew more than 2,000 experts and scholars as well as 160,000 online viewers.

In his opening address, Yang Dan, president of BFSU and deputy secretary of the CPC BFSU committee, highlighted the university's innovations in higher foreign language education and educational modernization.

BFSU has reformed its disciplinary structure, built a development mode featuring global languages, culture and governance and grasped the key points in country and regional studies, international communication and international organizations, according to Yang.

Apart from integrating languages and technology and establishing the BFSU Artificial Intelligence and Human Languages Lab and global language service platforms, the university also rebuilt its global educational system and released a global strategy, BFSU CREATE, which spans from 2020 to 2050, he added.

Wu Shixing, deputy director of the Department of Higher Education at the MOE, emphasized the need to improve the quality of self-cultivated talents and advance curriculum reform to make breakthroughs in higher education.

He proposed foreign language education innovation as well as the nurturing of foreign-related talents in key fields and a digitalized foreign language education mechanism to improve the quality of independent talent cultivation.

The forum launched the 2023 "FLTRP · ETIC Cup" Understanding Contemporary China National Foreign Language Contest for College Students, with the theme of The Chinese Path to Modernization in its English speech competition.

The forum included eight thematic forums on building a high-quality foreign language education and talent training system, as well as two  high-end summits on innovative approaches and education strategies for foreign language majors and curriculum systems.
