2022 Training Camp for International Volunteering Talents held at BFSU

The 2022 Training Camp for International Volunteering Talents opened on Sept 27 at the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP) of Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU).

Those in attendance at the event included officials from the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Volunteers Programme and the China International Center for Economic and Technical Exchanges, representatives from FLTRP, BFSU, renowned universities in Beijing and the Beijing Foreign Language Volunteer Association, as well as UN youth volunteers.

Jia Wenjian, deputy Party secretary of the CPC BFSU committee and vice-president of the university, talked about BFSU’s fine traditions and its exploration in talent training.

BFSU values patriotic education and guides students to broaden their international horizons, shoulder responsibilities and improve the well-being of humanity, Jia said, adding that the strategic cooperation between BFSU and the Beijing Volunteer Service Federation (BVSF) is to help young people participate in the reform and construction of the global governance system and contribute to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Jia, also dean of Beiwai College, called on volunteers enrolled in the training camp to foster their love for the country, set lofty goals, and think in big-picture terms to serve China and the world.

He also urged them to give full play to their language skills, promote better understanding of China and the world, stay earnest and resilient and maintain a good mindset when facing difficulties.

Zhu Haowei, an official from the CYL Central Committee Young Volunteer Guidance Center, affirmed Beijing’s role in improving international voluntary services as China’s capital city, and revealed the plan to expand cooperation projects with the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) program.

He encouraged volunteers to broaden their global vision, get familiar with the international discourse system, enhance cross-cultural communication skills, grow into international talents to spread the concept of a harmonious world, and establish the image of China as a responsible major power.

Li Jian, deputy secretary of the CYL Beijing Municipal committee and vice-president and secretary-general of the BVSF, spoke highly of volunteers’ role in Beijing, the host of two Olympic Games.

Li said he hopes the training camp will further cultivate and gather international volunteer service backbones who bear in mind the country’s most fundamental interests and humanistic care and are confident and capable of shouldering the missions of the times.

He encouraged them to build Beijing into an international exchange center, promote people-to-people bonds among countries and regions involved in the Belt and Road Initiative, and make Beijing’s "golden card" of volunteer service shine on the world stage.

BFSU and the BVSF reached a cooperation intention in international volunteer service exchanges and the selection of volunteers to serve in UNV projects.

The strategic cooperation, which will be undertaken by Beiwai College, is an important approach for further expanding students' international vision and enhancing their participation in global governance.

This year, the college started to select students for the UNV program, and has sent six undergraduate students from the 2024 class to offer services at Beijing offices of the United Nations Development Program, the United Nations Volunteers Program and the United Nations Population Fund.
