BFSU releases index series on international communication competence

Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) released a series of international communication competence indices at a press conference held on May 28.

These indices were developed by BFSU and they are part of the university’s global index research.

Yang Dan, deputy Party secretary of the CPC BFSU committee and president of the university, delivered a speech, saying that the indices on international communication competence advocate the application of all languages in China’s international communication discourse competence improvement.

Aiming to boost China’s influence in international communication, its cultural appeal and friendly image, the indices will help enhance and strengthen the international communication of Chinese discourse, Yang said.

Yu Hongjun, former vice-minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, said China is attaching more importance to international communication than ever before. The improvement of international communication competence is closely linked to the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative and the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

International communication is inseparable from international exchanges and cooperation, in which BFSU has significant advantages, Yu added.

Yan Wenbin, former vice-president of Xinhua News Agency, said the release of these indices will promote the transformation of international communication from media to digital platform and make China's voice heard in the international context.

Shi Mingde, president of China Germany Friendship Association, delivered a keynote speech, saying that BFSU’s index project series is problem-oriented and realizes multidisciplinary research and in-depth cooperation.

Professor Li Yuming, former Party secretary of the CPC committee of Beijing Language and Culture University, stressed that progress will be made in both academic and industrial fields through index research for more international cooperation, and that the voice of China will easily be heard.

The indices released at the conference include the following: global language index based on 101 languages, national language ability index, national translation ability index, national index of international communication competence, international communication competence index of cities, international communication competence index of Chinese enterprises, media global news network communication index and global Chinese studies research index.

The indices series presents a more scientific, solid and quantitative research path, which opens up new horizons for the study of international communication competence under the background of new liberal arts construction, said officials, scholars and experts during the conference.
