Department of Hispanic and Portuguese of BFSU is dedicated to Hispanic and Portuguese language teaching and research. It was the first Hispanic-teaching institution in China with the launch of the Hispanic Program in 1952 and the second Portuguese-teaching institution for launch of the Portuguese Program in 1961.

In 1979, the Hispanic Program was the first in China to be authorized to offer master's degree in Hispanic language studies. In 1996, the first doctoral Hispanic-teaching program in China was launched. In 2007, its Portuguese Program became the first in China with authorization to offer master's degrees. In 2010, the Hispanic Program was accredited a key discipline of Beijing. In 2019, both programs were shortlisted for the first batch of national leading disciplines.

The Department of Hispanic and Portuguese is committed to a mission of cultivating inter-disciplinary, high-quality professionals with solid language skills for careers in diplomacy, trade, business, education, culture, tech and journalism, among others. The four-year undergraduate programs offer senior students tracks in linguistics, translation, literature, Latin-American politics, and global trade.

Under the three-year MA program, students can choose to pursue linguistics, literature, translation, and political/economic research in Hispanic and Portuguese-speaking countries. The two-year MTI program is offered in two tracks -- translation and interpretation. The doctoral program, typically taking three to four years to finish, recruits students with research interest in translation and Latin-American literature.

As of June 2021, the department has a full-time faculty of 29 members, including four professors and 11 associate professors. Sixty percent of the faculty members hold doctoral degrees. Additionally, four faculty members of foreign nationalities work for the School on long-term engagements. A host of short programs by domestic and overseas academics are offered to support the development of students.
