The Office of Confucius Institutes at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) held its first international online concert, titled “Music to Our Ears”, on May 29.

Jia Wenjian, deputy secretary of the Party Committee and vice president of BFSU, delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. Music has the power to comfort and inspire people and this special power is more evident and effective in the pandemic period, he said. 

Jia stated that the online concert was organized on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of BFSU. It was designed to bring more joy and power to all involved people, strengthen cultural exchanges between China and other countries, and connect the audience closer. Prior to the conclusion of his speech, Jia extended an invitation to all teachers and students from overseas BFSU Confucius Institutes to visit Beijing and BFSU when the COVID-19 pandemic comes to an end.

The concert began with a school song by BFSU students, which expressed the determination and courage of BFSUers from all over the world in holding their positions against the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Students from BFSU and its affiliated Confucius Institutes in other countries also performed popular songs and music using traditional Chinese and foreign musical instruments during the concert.

At the end of the concert, all attendees from overseas BFSU Confucius Institutes jointly sent their best wishes to the university for the 80th anniversary of its founding.

The concert attracted a total of 14 overseas BFSU Confucius Institutes to participated in the performance, and it was viewed by 1,200 people online. Based on the experience of this event, the BFSU Office of Confucius Institutes will explore and innovate the form and content of the concert and make it a characteristic cultural project of the university.
